The PMA Varsity Girl’s Soccer team opened up the 2016-2017 season with a nail biter vs. Mary Star of the Sea on Tuesday, November 22nd at PMA. The PMA Warriors made their presence known early in the game with a goal by freshman Lesly Carrera at 19:16 (assist by junior Natalie Fernandez). The Warriors closed out the half with a 1-0 lead. During the 2nd half, Mary Star found their way to the back of the net at 71:25 to tie the game 1-1. PMA responded with an aggressive offensive attack and was awarded a penalty kick after Mary Star’s Goalkeeper took out the legs of freshman Lesly Carerra who had chipped the ball over the keeper during a break away. The keeper’s actions left Carerra on the ground requiring the attention of PMA’s athletic trainer and head varsity coach. Mary Star’s goalkeeper was carded and removed from the game. PMA was awarded a penalty kick (PK) and junior Valerie Ruiz solidified her first goal of the season with a well placed PK to the right corner of the goal – to put PMA up 2-1 at 80:01. Due to injury stoppage, approximately four additional minutes were added to the end of the game after the PK was taken. During overage time, a hard fought battle ensued between PMA and Mary Star. PMA aiming to hold on to their slim lead and Mary Star seeking to come from behind. In overage time, PMA unfortunately fell short of victory with a final score of 3-2 (Mary Star). Despite the outcome of the game, the PMA Warriors show great promise as a skilled, young team. In both victory and loss there is something to be gained and the Warriors will only grow stronger from this experience as they prepare for league in January.
