April’s top high school sports story from across California comes from Ramona High School in Ramona, San Diego County, where former Bulldog Kelsey Plum was selected #1 overall in the WNBA draft.

Kelsey, long known as a standout for the Washington Huskies, was named the AP’s NCAA Player of the Year, and beyond the court, rallied the student body in Seattle around women’s basketball in a way they haven’t ever before:

The Warriors won in straight sets in their home opener on Tuesday. Setter and captain Alfredo Ramirez had 22 assists and a personal best 6 aces. Junior Luis Morales led all offense with a team high 7 kills, followed by Manuel Padilla with 6 kills. Middle hitter Ahmed Salem led the defensive charge with a personal best 5 blocks. The Warriors continue league play on Tuesday April 25th at 6 pm in the Warrior Gymnasium.

Game Recap

The Warriors squandered many chances in leaving 10 runners on base in the loss to the 2nd place St. Marys Academy Belles. Pitcher Christina Rodarte scattered 10 hits but was let down by her defense which committed 5 errors and allowed 6 unearned runs. Samantha Nacayama led the way offensively going 4-for5 wjile Michelle Nacayama was 1-for-3 with 2 rbi’s and Kayla Maldonado was 1-for-4 with 2 rbi’s. Adela Peralta broke out of her slump and was 2-for-3.

Game Recap

In the nitecap of the doubleheader Christina Rodarte pitched 6 strong innings striking out 4 with no walks and scattering 10 hits while allowing 4 earned runs in the loss. Samantha Nacayama was 2-for-2 and Seini Hala continued her hot streak going 2-for-4 and scoring 1 run. Next game is a tough non-league game vs Mary Star on Monday before going back to league on Tuesday at 2:30 at Apollo Park in a battle for 2nd place in league.

The Warriors lost the battle for first place in a 5-1 defeat to the St. Genevieve Valiants. Kayla Maldonado knocked in the lone run for the Warriors in the 6th inning. The Warriors failed to take advantage and left the bases loaded 3 times in the 7 inning game. With the loss the Warriors are now tied with St. Marys Academy for 2nd, the two teams meet next Tuesday April 11 at 2:30 at Apollo Park.
