The Warriors reignited a past rivalry with Cantwell-Sacred Heart of Mary in a highly contested back-and-forth game which headed down to the final drive on Friday. While the Warriors came up one point short, falling 32-31, they showed tremendous grit continuously coming back from deficits, injuries, and other setbacks.
Senior lineman Leonard Payne paved the way for the Warriors in all three phases with 10 tackles (9 solo), including 4 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, 2 forced fumbles and one recovery. The Warrior Defense forced 7 total turnovers on the night, including 4 interceptions and 3 fumble recoveries.
Offensively, Quarterback Ricky Latimer spread the ball around for 160 yards on 20 attempts, including touchdown passes of 56 and 15 yards, while also rushing for 34 yards on 12 carries. Running Back Juju Merritt had 21 carries for 84 yards, including a dynamic 54 yard TD run in the 3rd quarter to take the Warriors’ first lead of the night. Wide Receiver Justin Wilson had a season-high four catches for 50 yards, with 3 occurring on critical third downs.
The Warriors will begin Academy league play next Friday night when they host Crean Lutheran at home. Kickoff is set for 7:00 pm.
